The London Triathlon will take place this coming weekend! Not much time left to prepare and our competitors are all raring to go!
The DBF is very proud to be fielding 3 teams, one consisting entirely of leg amputees, and one solo competitor for this iconic event.
1) Wyn Jenkins (swim), Margaret Biggs (bike) and Helen Chapman (run). (Disabled Team Relay)
Both Wyn and Margaret (Maggz) are esteemed DBF Ambassadors. Wyn is an above-knee amputee and Maggz a below-knee amputee. These 2 intrepid and indomitable Ambassadors perform an invaluable service to the Douglas Bader Foundation showing, as they do, that losing a limb certainly doesn’t mean losing a life. Maggz is actually putting in better times now in her time trials than she was over 20 years ago! Amongst other achievements, they kicked off Team Bader Cycling last February by completing a tandem bike ride down the vertical axis (give or take a little geographical accuracy!) of Wales. They are a joint inspiration. They are being ably joined by Helen Chapman, also a leg amputee, who will complete the entry by undertaking the running section. We are so grateful to Wyn and Maggz for this latest effort on behalf of the charity and indebted to Helen for stepping boldly in to complete the team. The Triathlon should hold no fears for Helen who recently completed the London Marathon wearing her famous vivid pink running prosthesis. Some of you may remember reading about Helen in an earlier post on our BILL Website. Click HERE to revisit.
2) Tessa Barfield (swim), Mark “Buff” Barfield (bike) and Tim Delderfield (run) (Sprint Team Relay)
3) Lloyd James (swim), Mark Allison (bike) and Sophie Delderfield (run) (Olympic Team Relay)
You will have noticed a preponderance of Delderfields in the above 2 teams and that increases as Tessa Barfield changed the Delder to a Bar when she married Mark! So, again this represents fantastic support by the amazing Delderfield Family. Team Delderfield has already raised funds for the charity through a huge variety of activities, sporting and otherwise, and we are extremely grateful to them all. Keith, the founder of this awesomely talented dynasty, will already be known to many of you as an invaluable long-standing member of the DBF team and organiser of the hugely successful BADER BRAVES Young Aviators Days and other events. He and his wife, Jess, have also taken part in numerous DBF Fund-Raising Events, trekking the Great Wall of China amongst many other adventures on our behalf. To say we’re indebted to the Delderfields is something of an understatement!
Marg Jenkins. We also have a brave Solo Competitor in the form of Wyn’s wife, Marg. She will undertake all 3 disciplines on behalf of the charity. This is a fantastic effort and has required a considerable amount of training and dedication. We are so grateful to Marg for her support. Respect, Marg!
We wish all the competitors the very best of luck, success and an enjoyable day. The DBF is extremely lucky to have their support.
HOW YOU CAN SUPPORT THE COMPETITORS:
All the above have prepared hard for this Triathlon and have given up hours of their time and a considerable amount of their energy in training. They will be digging deep over the weekend on behalf of the charity and we ask you to dig deep to support their efforts. You can be sure that any donation, however small, will be very gratefully received and will be going to a very good cause.
- You can donate quickly and easily via Tessa Barfield’s JustGiving Page
- or direct to the DBF using the bespoke link on our Donation Page (Please be sure to scroll down the page to the Triathlon button)
It’d be lovely if you can support on the day too by being there to cheer our athletes on. You should be able to spot them easily enough in their DBF Kit. The cyclists will be resplendent in the Team Bader Cycling Kit designed by Maggz. (Is there no end to her talents!) and the runners will be wearing bespoke DBF T shirts. I’m not exactly sure what the swimmers will be wearing but was interested to learn that the Jenkins duo have one swimsuit…?! You will also see David Bickers and Keith Delderfield supporting from the sidelines also in cutting edge DBF gear so please go and say hello. They’d be delighted to see you.
If you’d like to attend, the event is taking place in and around the ExCel Exhibition Centre, Royal Victoria Dock, London E16 1XL
