RAF Waddington provides great day
For Bader Braves Young Aviators.
Even the weather was great on Saturday 24th July when ten Bader Braves along with their families, gathered at the entrance to RAF Waddington for the Bader Braves Young Aviators Day. It was a pretty impressive start as everyone was led in convoy to the RAF Waddington Flying Club, our hosts for the day, passing the Vulcan XM607 famed for being the aeroplane used in the bombing of Port Stanley in the Falklands War.
Club members treated each of the Braves to a spectacular trip from the airfield, over surrounding the countryside and the City of Lincoln with its magnificent cathedral; many of the braves who lived within range, were given the opportunity of viewing their own homes from the air. Apart from taking flights everyone was given the opportunity of trying their hand on a flight simulator, joining a range of games and activities, having their faces painted (there were a number of pirates, cats and super heroes around on the day!!) and enjoying a picnic lunch that had been provided.
During the afternoon everyone was taken to have a good look over a spitfire hangered nearby and although it wasn’t to fly on the day, our Bader Braves event coincided with another event on the station and we all had a fantastic view of a display given by one of the BBMF Spitfires, a fantastic and fairly unique occasion!!
We are all indebted to Gary Mennell, organiser of the day and his Flying Club colleagues for making it such a great occasion. As one parent said at the end of the afternoon “what a great day, it is so nice to be able to do something like this as a family and to meet others who understand just how important something like this is to my son; he will remember it for the rest of his life”.
At the end of the day Gary expressed his delight in the success of the day saying “now we have done one event I know what is involved and next year we can try to get more aircraft and pilots to participate so that many more Bader Braves can benefit!” Thank you Gary, that’s good to hear!!Tags: Bader, Bader Braves, Falklands War, Flying Day, Lincoln, Port Stanley, RAF, Spitfire, Waddington
