I couldn’t be more delighted to share the latest news from Bader Grant recipient, Para Dressage Rider Mari Akhurst.
Despite terrible weather, Mari and her beautiful equine partner, Sky O’Hara, beat all opposition to be crowned Grade 1 Gold National Champions, thereby retaining the title they won last year.
The weather was awful. But Sky was a superstar and did a really good test. We scored over 70% with two judges giving us over 72%. A massive high to end our year. Mari Akhurst
This is a particularly hard-won and poignant achievement for Mari who has Cerebral Palsy, hyper mobility and lax ligaments affecting all four limbs, resulting in left side muscle weakness and affecting her balance and muscle tone. That’s tough enough to contend with as it is but she has been battling with some new symptoms related to her condition throughout the year. However, with her indomitable spirit and determination, Mari has not allowed this setback to stand in the way of her goal of competing for Team GB in the 2020 Paralympics in Tokyo. This latest win is another important step towards that goal and we’re sure you’ll join us in congratulating Mari on this rewarding and very positive end to a challenging year.
