Douglas Bader remembered. A Great Day at Tangmere Military Aviation Museum.

A report by David Bickers who was at Tangmere Military Aviation Museum on Sunday:

Great Day at Tangmere Military Aviation Museum on Sunday 7th August.  ‘A Tribute to Douglas Bader ‘, held  just two days before the 70th Anniversary of Douglas’ last wartime active flight –  based at Tangmere, he took off from nearby West Hampnett and was shot down over France.

An early rainy and windy start turned into a sunny and very windy day. The two spitfires from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight sadly were advised of the 40mph wind which meant they were unable to attend. However the North American Harvard took advantage of the earlier favourable conditions giving a wonderful acrobatic display to the hundreds enjoying the day.

The Douglas Bader Foundation was delighted to be invited to be  there and show our first range of branded DBF and Bader Braves merchandise. Thanks to Pat Barnard of ARTTOFLY.ORG who donated a fine print, ‘The Tangmere Duel’  as a raffle prize signed by 4 Battle of Britain and four Luftwaffe pilots (including Douglas, and former DBF Trustees Johnnie Johnson, Hugh Dundas  as well as Adolf Galland) , we were inundated with interest, ticket and merchandise purchasers. The raffle winner Mrs Burleigh is shown with David Bickers.

The winner of the signed print kindly donated by Pat Barnard of ArtToFly, Mrs Burleigh, with the DBF's David Bickers

Our sincere thank you to everyone at Tangmere who put a wonderful Rememberance Day together and for all who attended as Exhibitors and Visitors.
