Bader Brave James enjoyed camp

We were delighted to hear from Over The Wall, a charity we’ve worked with for several years, that Bader Brave James enjoyed camp on a five-night residential stay for children with health challenges, and their siblings.

The DBF provided £25,000 to Over The Wall this year to fund 35 Bader Brave places at camps throughout the year.

With the closure of our popular Bader Braves Young Aviators Days Scheme last year, we were keen to find ways to continue to support youngsters with limb difference and other physical and mental disabilities to experience alternative events and challenges. Over The Wall provides the perfect opportunity to do this with their thoroughly enjoyable residential camps. The fact that the camps are available to siblings was a blessing as James had been a bit apprehensive about attending; but his older sister, Daisy, was able to go along and provide moral support and a confidence boost. As a result, both James (9)  who has limb difference, and Daisy (11) who was diagnosed with Coeliac Disease as a young child, had a fantastic 5 days, as you’ll see from the report below.

An inspired idea is that the camps start with a Zoom call where campers learn what activities they can expect to take part in and get a feel for the place and what will be involved, which breaks the ice as well as whetting the appetite for mischief and magic! After this initial introduction, both James and Daisy were excited to attend and try out some of the things on offer, nerves or not!

Over The Wall has considerable experience in dealing with children with seen and unseen disabilities and is adept at making them feel relaxed and included.

It’s not a big deal – they’re accepting of people who have different need, but it’s not the thing that defines them –  Joanna, James’s mum

The UK based charity, which has now been operating for over 25 years, enables children and young people with health challenges and disabilities to discover a “world of mischief and magic“.

The DBF is proud to work with Over The Wall to offer children such positive and confidence building experiences and delighted to learn that Bader Brave James enjoyed camp despite some early apprehension. The charity is true to its promise and really does provide a safe place to step outside of comfort zones, establish friendships and build confidence through meaningful and exciting activities.
