We were delighted to support Team Mind over Matter in their epic challenge when they took on the gruelling “Race Across America” (RAAM) in June. This challenge, ‘the hardest bike race in the universe’ (Gemma Trotter), is renowned for its difficulty and we were so proud of Team MoM, which included DBF Ambassador, Wyn Jenkins, driving as support crew while his redoubtable wife, Marg, rode with the team.
Also in the team was long-time friend of the DBF, amputee Linda Chen, who can be seen in action by following the link at the bottom of this post. An amazing achievement for Linda who only quite recently took up cycling after taking part in one of the Dambusters Cycle Rides.
Team Mind over Matter deserve huge accolade not just for completing the challenge but for doing it in such good time, averaging 15.7mph over thousands of miles with more thousands of feet of climbing. We are incredibly proud of them all.
Read on for Mind over Matter Team Founder and Captain, Sally Orange’s report. There will be more photographs to follow.
In the 38 year history of the world’s toughest cycle race there has only ever been 2 female teams of 8 cyclists complete this challenge. It is believed however that NEVER before has there been an all female wounded, injured and sick team complete the race.
3070 miles, 12 states, 170,000 ft of climbing over 8 days and 12 mins in the world’s toughest cycle race, team Mind over Matter completed The Race Across America.
Words can not express how proud I am of this team (both cyclists and support crew), most of whom have had to overcome their own physical and psychological health challenges. Their commitment, determination, teamwork and dedication has been second to none and all gave above and beyond what I could ever have expected.
Although all team members were on the same event, the challenges faced and successes achieved differed from person to person, however one of the main purposes of the challenge was to push individual limitations in order to provide focus and develop self-confidence. Through delving into the realms of unfamiliarity, the team have demonstrated to themselves what they are truly capable of and this in turn will serve to improve their personal growth and development for the future.
However, this Endeavour was never about impressing. More so, the aim was an attempt to inspire others, through the medium of cycling, that no matter what an individual’s age or mental/physical condition may be, things are achievable and should not limit anyone in what they can achieve, however big or small their challenge may be. All of the above was done whilst also raising awareness of invisible health conditions at the same time.
On behalf of the team I would therefore very much like to express our sincere thanks to the Douglas Bader Foundation, as without your financial support and belief in the project, this dream would not have been possible.
