THIS IS OUR CHANCE TO HAVE OUR SAY

Prosthetics Service Review

NHS England is responsible for planning and buying specialised services for people who need complex disability equipment. This includes all major upper and lower limb amputees and people with congenital limb deficiencies who have a potential to use prosthesis to help them mobilise or improve upper limb function.

Given the ever increasing financial pressures facing our health services, NHS England is working to ensure we achieve maximum return from every pound spent, while providing the best quality care for patients. As part of this, we are reviewing a broad range of specialised services including prosthetics.

The number of patients with an amputation or congenital limb deficiency attending specialist rehabilitation service centres in the UK is estimated at 55,000 – 60,000. NHS England spends approximately £60 million per year on these services.

There are 35 centres in England that provide specialised prosthetic services. These are consultant-led services and they involve a specialised multi-disciplinary team, which includes, for example; prosthetist; occupational therapist; physiotherapist; podiatrist; and psychologist.

We are currently in the early stages of this process, looking at financial information, patient experience and data from centres to understand whether the services currently provided meet the needs of patients across the whole of England, while remaining cost effective.

Innovations in prosthetics are fast moving, with ongoing improvements as technology advances, so we need to commission services for the future as well as ensuring that patients across the country have equitable access to high quality care.

We will be working with patient groups and other key stakeholders over the next few months so that we better understand how patients currently experience services, and where they feel care could be improved. If you are holding a patient group or event between now and October – please do get in touch at  and let us know.

To receive regular updates about the prosthetics review directly, please sign up as a registered stakeholder for the Rehabilitation & Disability CRG (Clinical Reference Group).

Very Positive News and a Big Meet Update from OPUS (Orthotic & Prosthetic Users Stanmore)

We’re delighted to hear that OPUS (Orthotic and Prosthetic Users Stanmore) is going from strength to strength with numbers growing steadily and enquiries being received from further and further afield. As mentioned in an earlier post, they have now formed links with STEP UP!, Luton, and are hoping that users from other centres will join them in their activities.

Clearly the latest Big Meet Up was a lot of fun! You can read Sandra Staffiero’s report below and email her on:  if you’d like to know more about either of these friendly and supportive groups and the next Big Meet up in October or the barge trip being organised by Step Up! in September. Information can also be found using the links underneath the post.

It is very important that we support one another.  Sandra Staffiero (OPUS)

‘The ever growing Big Meet Up arranged by the Orthotic and Prosthetic Users Stanmore (OPUS), took place on Saturday 7 April.  The event was held at the Battle Axes public house in Elstree.

People came from as far afield as Solihull and Bournemouth to meet up with new and old friends, for an afternoon filled with laughter and conversation.  It was also an opportunity for those in the transition period of deciding whether surgery would be the correct option for them, joining established amputees who were able to answer their many questions.

OPUS are assured that they left secure in the knowledge that there is joy after amputation. Life certainly does carry on in a positive way. Peer support for orthotic and prosthetic users is a continual and important part of this lifelong rehabilitation journey.  OPUS are, as always, delighted to be a part of this.

The next Big Meet Up event will be in October 2018.  Step Up! Luton are arranging a fully accessible barge trip in September.  Further details can be found on the OPUS website and Facebook page.  You can also register an interest by email:
