Films that highlight the importance of disability rights

We’ve been contacted by Frankie Eades who’s in charge of Festival Marketing and Audience Engagement for Together Films. Frankie is currently working on behalf of the Human Rights Watch Film Festival London. The #HRWFFLDN 2020 edition is fast approaching (March 12-20) and tickets are on sale now! Frankie is keen to get the word out and make everyone aware of the amazing programme.

The HRWFFLDN 2020 will showcase life-affirming and uplifting films that highlight the importance of disability rights, and encourage us to let go of our preconceptions to celebrate our loved ones for all that makes them uniquely themselves.

One such film, the powerful documentary, Crip Camp, certainly does this!

The blurb reads: In the wake of famous 1969 counterculture festival Woodstock in upstate New York, Camp Jened hosted their own wild getaways. Teenagers with disabilities spent their summers escaping their parents’ overbearing care and widespread societal prejudices to discover themselves, express opinions freely, and have lots of fun at the same time. From this group of friends grew a collective of revolutionary activists who boldly celebrated each other’s differences, provided support, and stood together to fight for their rights in a world failing to make room for them. Directors Nicole Newnham and ex-camper Jim LeBrecht capture the spirit, music, and budding activism of 1970’s youth in this playful yet deeply moving documentary, and invite us on a journey through the widely overlooked formation of a disability rights movement that continues to this day. 

The film will be playing at Barbican, and Regents Street Cinema on the following dates:
  • Barbican, 17th March, 18.10
  • Regents Street Cinema, 18th March, 18.15

Activist and Camp Counsellor, Judy Heumann says: “I wanna see a feisty group of disabled people all around the world. A group of people who will not accept ‘no’ without asking why…. If you don’t respect yourself and if you don’t demand what you believe in for yourself, you’re not gonna get it.”

Come and celebrate and be inspired by these brave filmmakers and film subjects who are risking it all to tell their story.
